Senna Pods
Senna contains compounds called anthraquinones that give the plant its laxative effect. This may also make the herb useful for clearing the bowels before a colonoscopy, treating some irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms, and relieving hemorrhoid symptoms. Senna is FDA approved (OTC) and was widely used to help clear the bowels prior to colonoscopy procedures. Currently, some folks take Senna to help relieve constipation. Senna can NOT be used for long periods of time.
Senna should not be used for more than 1 week without the supervision of a healthcare provider.
Long-term use can cause the bowels to stop functioning normally and might cause dependence on laxatives. Long-term use can also cause liver damage and other harmful effects.
